In Memoriam: Milton William “Bill” Frey II, Ph.D. (1934–2026)
Founder and Chairman

A native of Philadelphia, Bill Frey transitioned from a distinguished career in academia to become one of Southwest Florida’s most respected homebuilders. After earning his Ph.D. from Penn State and serving as an Assistant Dean at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Bill moved to Sanibel in 1975. There, he founded Sanibel Homes, building hundreds of residences that defined the island's character before co-founding Frey & Son Homes with his son, Barry—a partnership that remains the foundation of our company today.

Beyond his professional success, Bill was a man of deep faith and extraordinary generosity. Recognized as the 2007 Lee County Philanthropist of the Year, his legacy is felt throughout the region through his leadership with the Southwest Florida Community Foundation and his endowment of Carson Scholarships in 15 local schools. Bill’s visionary leadership, integrity, and commitment to architectural excellence continue to guide our team and the homes we build every day.

Memorial gifts may be made to GenOn Ministries or the Harry Chapin Food Bank of Southwest Florida.
